I believe that adults have the right to receive factual information and to participate in honest dialogue about human sexuality. Counselors and healthcare workers should be well-informed and comfortable discussing the sexual concerns of their clients. Counselors and healthcare workers should be sensitive to the needs of all their clients, especially those of minority groups, including economic, social, ethnic, & cultural minorities, and people with medical, psychiatric, and physical disabilities. Counselors and Healthcare workers should be especially sensitive to the needs of clients who have concerns about their sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual behavior, and sexual health. Cultural diversity and differences of opinion should be welcomed, respected, and the uniqueness of each person served should be affirmed. In addition, parents and families need to have access to information about human sexuality to help them manage sexual issues within their family and community environment. This information needs to be factual, sensitive to the fact that there are many different family values. Helping professionals need to be able to work with their service recipients using an open, non-judgmental attitude and a willingness to research information and resources for the benefit of their clients. |
